Top Catastrophic Claim Cost Report Issued

December 17, 2018

According to their annual report on catastrophic claims, national insurer Sun Life reports that cancer related illnesses continue to dominate costly claims facing employers and plan sponsors. According to their 2018 Stop Loss Research Report, 10 medical conditions drive 52% of all annual stop loss reimbursements. Of that, 27% of all large stop loss payments were related to some form of cancer. The illustration below is a summary extract from the report that compares the ranking of large claims between 2014-2017 vs. 2013-2016.

These results support the notion that employers and plan sponsors must devote significant resources and strategies around “focused” chronic and catastrophic care management services, like personalized health care navigators. Even a modest impact on cost and quality can have a demonstrative impact on large claims. This is why Conner Strong & Buckelew has launched its unique BeneRN care management solution to align large claimants with personal nurse navigators.
