Group Benefit Plan Costs to Reach Nearly $15,000 per Employee in 2019

According to published benchmarking data from the National Business Group on Health (NBGH), the all-in, gross annual health benefit cost per employee is expected to reach nearly $15,000 nationally in 2019. This figure includes:

  • The employer’s expected medical and pharmacy costs,
  • The amount of employee payroll contribution sharing,
  • The amount of employee out of pocket costs for things like deductibles, copays, etc., and,
  • The estimated cost of any contribution amount an employer may be making to the employee’s HRA or HSA (as applicable)

The reported national average for 2018 was $14,099 which is expected to increase by an estimated 5% in 2019 to $14,800. The NBGH is an independent membership association of America’s largest employers devoted to best practices in employee health benefits and improving health care delivery. Their data is based on survey responses from their large universe of participating employers and reflects the composite results of all their collective benefit plans, geographies and work-forces.Attached is a one-page set of major headlines and related graphics for your use.
